Compost

Composting is a great way to cut down on your waste. And, you can use the dirt for a garden! About 24% of our trash could be used for composting.

What is Composting?

Composting is when you take compostable items in one area. In that area, they break down and decompose into dirt.

What are Compostable items?

Compostable items are natural things such as fruits, vegetables, and other plants. Man made items are not compostable, such as plastic and metal.

Do compost:

  • Fruit scraps
  • Veggie scraps
  • Grass cuttings
  • Coffee grounds
  • Pine needles
  • Egg shells
  • Wood shavings/sawdust
  • Paper

Don’t compost:

  • Meat
  • Salad with dressing
  • Plastic
  • Metal
  • Solid wood
  • Glass
  • Fat
  • Dairy
  • Bones

How do I Compost?

First start with your compost bin. You can order one online, or make your own.

To make your own, you will need a bin and lid.

1. At the bottom of your bin, drill a few small holes. This is so any liquids may drain.

2. Put newspaper, or fallen tree leaves in the bin. This should fill the bin 1/4-1/8 of the way up.

3. Put dirt over the bottom layer. It should now be halfway full.

4. Put in your compostable items! To know what to compost, see above in What are Compostable Items?

5. Put some water in the mix. Not too much though, or it will start to stink!

6. Drill holes in the lid. This is for air flow.

7. Find a shady spot to put your compost bin!

8. Continue adding compostable items! Maybe stir the mixture every often.

9. When it turns to dirt, take it out and use it in a garden!

10. Have fun!
